Tear jerker alert!
It’s been so rewarding to be able to work with dear friends on maternity photography shoots, especially starting out. This was my first maternity photo shoot in San Pedro. I met Mena through my husband, who has known Mena since she was 16 years old. Mena is short for Marielena, and her story is one of profound faith and courage in so many ways.
Mena and her husband John spent nearly 9 years in their process of getting pregnant. The heartache and the grief were tremendous. There was many a time when either my husband or myself were left crying and asking “why?” from an update over the years. The authenticity and character Mena demonstrated in the public and the private side of this process has been such a blessing to all of us.
Finally, this special promise child came forward. The buzz about him was tremendous. It’s as if all of us (her friends, family and even people who had not met them!) couldn’t help but wait with anticipation for him. You can see pictures of Ezekiel Reef Hughes (I’m starting to well up as I write the last sentence!) here…
We shot these pictures in San Pedro near the ocean, the place where proud papa John can be found at every opportunity. John is an established and well respected waterman around the area, and is known to bring home coolers full of seafood to hand out the to the neighborhood. Baby Zeke has a wild adventure ahead of him, and I couldn’t be more excited for my friend.
Update — A few years after this post, another miracle happened! Ezekiel has a baby sister named True! Oh my, what another amazing story.
