Ernie Howlett Park is one of my favorite locations for family photos. It’s easy in almost every way. This location is great for families of every size. It is nice for maternity photographs as well. It’s perfect for families with little children and milestone sessions.
Ernie Howlett Park is tucked in to Palos Verdes Estates. I’d like to think it is a hidden treasure. Many of my clients say that they’ve driven past it for years and never noticed that it was there. They have a playground, tennis courts, soccer fields, ring for horses, but my favorite part is the trail. The trail winds behind the park and is the perfect place for your family photos, maternity photos and milestone sessions.
I start all of my sessions at this tall staircase. It is a great spot for sitting photos. These stairs are awesome for staggering family members based on their height. I also love to get families cuddled up on these steps.
Once we’re done at the stairs we head up to the trail. The first thing everyone notices when they come up these stairs are the horses! There are horses and often goats behind a fence. These animals keep the little ones excited about their photos and gives them something fun to look forward to after their session.
Ernie Howlett Park has some of the most beautiful eucalyptus trees. I love these trees almost as much as I love the coastline. Planted in long rows, they provide the perfect backdrop for your photo session. There is also a lovely fenceline. It adds charm and is a great prop to lean against or just have in your photograph.
This part of the park is almost completely empty. The occasional horse and rider will come by, but mostly we will have the trail to ourselves. Because of the long trail, wide open spaces and lack of foot traffic this is a great spot for a large family photo. I have photographed groups of 20-30 people here.
This is one of my favorite places for milestone photography. I’ve done plenty of cake smashes and one year sessions here. Toddlers love nature, the horses, and trees.
Because of the staircase, this location is not ideal for elderly or handicapped with walkers or wheelchairs.
